The name comes from lands of that name in the parish of Kirkintilloch in Dumbartonshire, where Gartshores of that Ilk are said to have held land since the reign of Alexander II.

Gartschore is the first recorded spelling of the family name is from1478 during the time of James III.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Gartshore lands passed into the hands of the Murray Baronets of Ochentyre, and John Murray took the name of Gartshore into his own

Margaret Gartshore is recorded in Auchingeyth in 1591, James Garshore was minister at Cardross in 1676, and Alexander Garshoar de eodem in 1699.

Dr. Maxwell Gartshore (1732 – 1812), a physician accoucher, is the most well known of this name.
